Presidential Reflections

We’ve ended a difficult journey as a church and now we stand at a crossroads.  A new adventure lies before us.  Will it be easier?  I don’t know, but I know that we are stronger for having made the journey with Suzanne.

Following Suzanne’s memorial service, her friend Jack Bryant told me that she had talked with him about her decision to move to Cheyenne.  Suzanne told him that we were a healthy congregation and that she believed, with a little support, we could move to the next level.  It happened in a way that none of us expected, but indeed, we are changed and have moved to the next level.

In Suzanne’s October Minister’s report, she shared her vision for the kind of prophetic activism that she felt UUCC was capable of and left us with this charge:

“Do not let my premature departure distract you from the important work standing before you.  Do not use my death as an excuse to slow you down.  When I am gone, pay your respects and move on.  My whole life was this work; my memorial will be the continuation of this work.”

And so, we continue on a new adventure and we are blessed to have the wisdom, compassion and enthusiasm of Rev. Dana Lightsey to guide us.  It is time to craft our vision for the future of UUCC.  In February, the church Board offered Dana the opportunity to move from a ¾-time position to full-time beginning in March and she accepted.  Further, the Board offered Dana an additional 12-month full-time contract beginning in July and she enthusiastically accepted that offer also.  This will allow UUCC to begin solid planning for next year’s budget and into the future.  Deepest thanks to Dana, for leading us gracefully through the saddest of times and joyfully into our bright future.

It would not be a church without you.  Thank you for all that you do.  Grab your backpack as we embark on a new adventure together.  I’m grateful to be with you on the journey.

Love is the spirit … and off we go!
