From Our Church President

Obviously, I can’t speak for anyone else. But I am betting that many of you feel as I do– I need the spirit of love and the promise of peace and truth of our UUCC covenant more than ever.

Unfortunately, there is a sense of fear and negativity that seems to permeate what we read and hear when we have the time to tune-in to the news. Certainly, we are all legitimately concerned about unemployment, people without health care coverage, flooding around the world, oil in the Gulf, deaths of service men and women and civilians and many other issues. These are serious challenges that must be handled. Yet, journalists and commentators oftentimes do not seem to focus on potential solutions to these challenges. With all of the work that needs to be done to help our fellow humans and to save our planet, why do we see the question of whether our President is a Muslim, or a U.S. citizen, as front page news or the subject of debate? When we have families working hard, and sometimes struggling, to raise and educate their children, why do some people fear the commitment of two people of the same gender to each other and their children? And why do so many of our elected representatives in Congress seem to want to exploit fear and negativity instead of working to make this a better world?

I have decided that probably it is not a good use of time to try to answer the questions I have posed. And I realize that the way in which I have posed the questions is judgmental. That is not helpful to the debate. Getting back to the basics most of us were taught as children, we need to teach love, peace and truth by our own actions, not by criticizing those who believe differently than we do. That gets me back to where I started– our church and our covenant are more important than ever. Fear and negativity breed fear and negativity. The antidote is love, peace and truth.

In the upcoming church year, we will spend time working toward development of our vision and working with our various committees and groups to keep improving on the work we do to carry out the mission of our church. In the process, we will be living our covenant. We will be working with each other in a spirit of love, peace and truth. And we will work to spread that spirit in our larger community. As we start our church year, I want to thank all of you for doing your part to sustain this church. Let’s keep its spirit healthy and growing for the benefit of all of us and the world around us. Our church is needed– now more than ever.

Rhonda
