For all Sunday Service connection information please scroll down  My wonderful and worthy neighbors, I came to you here in Cheyenne after three years living in the town of Indiana, just outside of Pittsburgh, PA, where our Unitarian Universalists from all over the country will be meeting in June for General Assembly. Pittsburgh is a city you may know as the home of Mr. Rogers. Mr. Rogers was a gently-spoken, kind, brave person who ran a children’s television show on PBS when I was a child. Today, his messages continue to be seen on Daniel Tiger, which many current children watch and love. What I learned watching Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood as a child is that we all have emotions like hope and fear and joy and sadness, and we all need other people. We need a community capable of hearing all the beautiful ways that we are and all the ways that we are struggling as well in order to live a good life and become our best selves. Mr. Rogers said, “I love you, just the way you are,” and I, like so many of the children who grew up with him, believed it. So as much as I find worth in the complex words of theologians and philosophers, when I need to find a simple way forward with my feelings, I come back to Mr. Rogers. So this week, I watched this old video: It starts out asking, “What do you do with the mad that you feel When you feel so mad you could bite? When the whole wide world seems oh, so wrong… And nothing you do seems very right? Well, I sure have been thinking about where I put my feelings of frustration with our legislature who seem not to understand how blessed and wonderful our children and Youth in this very congregation are. So, I’ve been turning that back around into abundant love and a fierce appreciation for the hard work and courageous witness I’m seeing when people all the way from 5-85 years old are committed to loving one another. And I’ll note that this Mr. Rogers song ends on a gender binary note, but Mr. Rogers always told us that how we feel inside is real and worthy, and so I’ll say that if you’re a boy who becomes a woman or a girl who may grow up to be a man, or a person of any age who has a gender that’s doesn’t go in one of those two boxes, Mr. Rogers would’ve told you this: “I like you as you are Exactly and precisely I think you turned out nicely And I like you as you are” Here we are in our church community, capable of carrying that message of abundant, extravagant, overflowing, and unceasingly divine Love into the world. Here, we are building a community where we can trust ourselves to be held when we are not strong enough to do it all alone, and celebrated for being who we are without apology, and given the space to grieve in community, to come here for help. Here, we are building a space where people can return without shame when we’ve had an emotional outburst, a mental health issue, a substance abuse relapse… when we’re struggling with things we cannot even name, we come back here because we’re ready to work together to find a way forward, or just to sit with you in your pain. Here we are a community of trust. Let us be worthy of opening our hearts to one another. Let us do our best work in this sacred space which we are building together. In the fullness of love, Rev.
