For all Sunday Service connection information please scroll down —–  Dear friends, The question of what a minister is for, and when you should be in touch is one that comes up perennially in the life of any congregation and ministry. As we head into the time of our year when people tend to travel more and be a little less tethered to home, I wanted to check in about the question of ministerial availability. A minister’s schedule is a strange and busy one, even in the best and most normal of times. Some weeks, we’re in the office for days working on writing policies or running a hiring search. Other weeks, a congregant with a life-threatening illness takes precedence, we’re out at 11pm for a house fire, or working from miles away at a ministerial retreat or a children’s camp… but the Church is by definition an entity you can reach out to whenever life is hard, whenever you need a little extra care and comfort, whether it’s 6am or 11pm, the Church exists (though I might need to call you back when I’m awake). It’s nearly summer, do you know where your minister is? In the summer, ministers (and many congregants) travel. As the pandemic made abundantly clear, distance doesn’t mean we cease to be connected to community, but it does mean we need to be more intentional about reaching out to one another and taking care to maintain our bonds. So today, I’d like to share a few tips about WHEN you should contact the minister (yes, even if they’re on vacation), and HOW you can contact the minister as well. When should I be in contact with the minister? Is there something going on in your life that might be hard for you or that makes you want to answer some big questions about life and death and what you believe? That’s always a good time to contact your minister. The purpose is not to have the minister answer those questions for you, but because it can be good to have calm company while you think and feel your way through. It might feel urgent, or maybe you just want the minister to know you’ve been thinking about things and have iced tea together on the porch. Is it urgent? My rule of thumb for contacting a minister who is on vacation, probably asleep, out of town, or taking sabbath is simple. Is there a threat to life with an urgent need for help? Some examples might include:Serious illness or injuryA deathSuicidal thoughts or attemptsBeing arrestedBeing kicked out of housingInvoluntarily or voluntarily checked into a mental health facilityYour house is on fireThe church is on fireAny situation in which you are overwhelmed and can no longer make decisions safely for you or your family How should I contact the minister? If it’s an urgent situation, please call or text the minister on their cell phone. You can find the number on Realm. You can also use Facebook Messenger if you have WiFi. If it’s something that could wait a few days to a week, then you could still text or use Messenger, but you can also email or book an appointment using Rev. If I do not have access to email or texting, our Board President and pastoral volunteers will be aware. Please contact Mike Lammers or another pastoral volunteer, or a Board member in these times to make sure you have access to the immediate help you need until I am able to return. Remember that the minister is not the whole church, and the Church is here, to quote David Bumbaugh, beyond “time, and death, and the space between the stars.” In expansive love, Rev. Norbert Fabian Čapek (pronounced “CHOP-eck”). That ritual has endured and is treasured by Unitarian Universalists around the world who are now eager to celebrate its centennial. The meaning of the Flower Ceremony, or Flower Communion–in Czech the name translates as Flower Celebration–is rooted in its powerful simplicity: each person brings a flower to church, where they’re mingled in a single vase. After being blessed–often using Čapek’s own words–the flowers are redistributed so that everyone takes home a flower different from the one they brought. There’s more to the flower ceremony, though–more to understand about its origins, practice, and expressions–and so it’s been a delight to curate an online treasure-box of centennial resources for UU congregations.
